Day 7 on the 3/06/09

Today we went under the sea. I hung a white sheet in front of the window to use all our lovely light for shadow puppetry. Using foam we cut out shadow puppets that where both rod and string. Then we met Ruby (temple streets travelling puppet) one of the girls decided to play with ruby.

All of the hospitals computers where down and it was really disappointing as I had told the children about connecting up with the hospital that sent ruby.

We then went on to play with the puppets. One of the parents who had been making his own puppets through the session filmed half of the play, then one of the children took over. The recorders batteries went and so unfortunately all the lovely chatting at the begging was not recorded. Teacher to the rescue, she ran off and got me new ones and we got the rest recorded.

A little girl who was very quite started to use her bunny teddy and really came out of her shell. I feel that even though the shadows are fun the children seem to connect more to a 3d puppet. It was nice to do a different kind of puppetry as i had a girl in my last three sessions so it kept it fresh for her.

The children got together and wrote a story for Ruby’s limerick adventure and a postcard to send to temple street. There was a list of hellos in different languages, the children added some new hello’s to the temple street list such as French, Italian, Spanish, Hindi and Chinese. Great idea Anna I learnt lots of new words.

So in the afternoon I worked one on one with a 13 year old girl the light was not good in the ward and she really liked ruby so she made her a friend and ruby a necklace (see pic).

I then worked with a lovely boy in isolation he was really eager and made a lovely bird. It was my second week making a puppet with him and it was great fun. We invented a new puppet together who when operated from the middle flapped its wings. I had to wear gloves and it was hard to not get the tape stuck to them rather then the puppet, he had to try and separate me and the puppet on several occasions which was a little annoying but mostly funny. Unfortunately I could not bring in my camera to take a picture or a film.

I felt the children in the afternoon where more attached to their puppets, I feel they don’t connect so much to 2d, so feel even when making shadow puppets in the future it might be better to have them 3d.

It was great having ruby the puppet and I am looking forward to the next parcel next week.
