Day 13 - Additions

Before the Easter Break, we were joined by Marianne, the substitute teacher who took Charlotte`s place. In conversation with Marianne, she expressed an interest in working with the children on describing where they lived, with particular reference to describing directions. I thought this would fit in well, with what I`m now seeing as an overall portrait of a place.

The children were excited by the idea of map making and we eased into the exercise by having a treasure hunt. Groups made maps of the school grounds emphasizing objects/areas which would give clues to where they had hidden a particular object. The maps were then rolled in true pirate-style and handed over to another group to find the treasure.

Afterward, each child took to making their own map of their home and surroundings. Each child began with an A4 sheet and added a sheet as they needed, to extend a road or a field etc. Some children made it all the way to the nearest town. We talked about what kinds of symbols or key codes we could use. The results were very individually and strangely shaped maps - some of which proved very difficult to roll up for storage!

We`ll be continuing these on Day 14. There were suggestions as to how to combine the imagery we have been producing. We will need to investigate this further.
