Day 5: Weather Panes
The idea for day 5 came from the origami piece on the window and from the `weather drawings`, to use the window panes to create `weather`. Using paper, tissue paper, in a variety of colors, cutting, slitting, tearing, layering. While with the weather drawings the children were quite abstract and close up with their imagery, they were inclined toward creating a complete landscape on the windows rather than abstracted weather, which I had imagined as the result. It was an interesting moment, when I found myself a little disappointed at what was being made, and the substitute teacher, who was working with me for the day, noted how much the children seemed to have enjoyed the making and how she herself enjoyed seeing the process. in a discussion afterward, the majority of the children thought that the session worked, but did not want to work any further on this idea. I isolated a few sections of the window pieces to document. There was also an interesting point where the window pane i thought was working very well, was ripped down by the children making it, who weren`t happy with it!
So we returned to the 3D environment constructions. But the miriad of ideas the children had had for these constructions, seemed to disappear, and they all began to construct in the exact same way. We stopped a few times to recap on the ideas we had had over the weeks, but the individuality didn`t return. The day ended before we got too far with this, so we decided to take it up again in week six.
