The Wishing Tree

THE WISHING TREE - AN EARLY YEARS ARTISTS’ GARDEN FOR THE FUTURE

We have planted so many seeds since I first came across this marvellous arts sector in 2007 in Romania. The gardens are weeded and the earth is turned ready to receive the seeds of new and innovative projects involving everyone I have mentioned as guest editor of practice.ie and many others who I know are beavering away behind the scenes. We look forward to flowers, trees, vegetables and all kinds of allotments in our early years garden of the future.

HELEN BARRY WISHES THAT:

• Professional artists are recognized as valuable contributors in the holistic wellbeing and development of the child’s life. In an ideal world this would enable practicing artists to be employed on a long-term contract as a teacher (e.g. the atelier model used in the Reggio Emilia in Italy where an artist has a studio in a school and supports a collaborative practice with the children).
• All City and County Arts Offices would support initiatives and partnerships that provide long-term residencies for professional artists in all areas of early years, primary and post primary education settings (e.g. DLRCC & Blackrock Education Centre, dlr primary arts initiative).
• Education Centres would engage visual artists to assist mentor teachers in developing their own creativity through in-service training. This would enhance creativity in the classroom and further support the other two points above.

JOE BRENNAN WISHES THAT

• Every child on the island of Ireland would have regular access to quality arts activities and performances.
• There was more funding. Children and young people make up a third of the population. It would be great to see one third of arts funding going to them.
• More work would be created in general so work is available year round and more original work with a distinctly Irish flavour.

JOHNNY HANRAHAN WISHES THAT
• He can disseminate good theatrical storytelling widely
• He could complement the theatrical experience with accompanying creative projects in every case.
• People could feel that they are getting superb value for money.

TONY AND SUSAN CASH OF MAGIC CARPET PRODUCTIONS WISH THAT:

• they had the financial means to achieve their goal of giving more children a love of live theatre, especially through performing in schools.
• they will be able to pass on the company to the next generation and bring home some emigrants to work with them.
• their work will result in the construction of a permanent Children’s Theatre.
