unfolding local information

Well.... I found out from talking to workers in the hub that it is Thomondgate - pronounced Toomingate* to my ears - that is the home of the Sodacakes...Killeely is a younger settlement of council planned housing made to rehabilitate families from the tenements of Patrick St and city centre Limerick. One new settler at the time went out for a pint of milk and had to ask a neighbour which house he came out of in order to get home, such was the unfamiliarity of the place, (the council also built houses within the walls of St. John`s Castle after the British were sent on their way)
Sodacake is a name worn proudly by the people of Thomondgate even today, another story goes that they were so named for lobbing hard breadcakes across the river to St. John`s castle during the Seige of Limerick......

Thomond (Irish: Tuadhmhumhain, meaning North Munster, now spelled Tuamhain)
