JAN SVENUNGSSON - "THE WRITING ARTIST"
Swedish born visual artist Jan Svenungsson linked in with us online from Berlin to talk about a key area of interest for him: "The Writing Artist"
Jan is interested in how the two alternative forms of expression (visual art and writing) may complement - or clash with - each other. The need to reflect on the relationship between an artist`s use of text and the work per se becomes stronger by the day, with the rising demand on textual output in the education system and especially, the artist`s PhD.
While professor for artistic research at the Post Graduate Department of the Finish Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki, Svenungsson published "An Artist`s Text Book" which, in an easy to read form, addresses practical as well as theoretical concerns regarding the role of text in the life of the visual artist today.
Here, we have included some short excerpts from his online presentation:
- Jan discusses the (perhaps misguided) perception of the implicit authority of the written word and its ability to assuage our uncertainty in terms of our interpretation of visual art.
- Jan cites examples of writing by artists who do not conform to the academic conventions and discusses the problematic nature of mainstreaming the text-based approach to visual art research.
- Contradiction and ambiguity as essential components of art. "Art is meant to address the imagination".
