Helium Arts, the children’s arts and health organisation, is hosting a unique family promenade day at the Irish Museum of Modern Art on Saturday 25 June 2016. Teenagers from CanTeen, the national young people’s cancer support group, have created a series of short films responding to the history of the Royal Hospital Kilmainham, the veteran soldiers who lived there and their own experiences of hospitalization and wellbeing. Visitors will be given a trail map to seek out film installations throughout the grounds of IMMA. These film works were produced during Helium’s Two Suitcases Project with the support of professional artists.
The Two Suitcases Promenade Day is taking place from 1-5 pm. Trail maps can be picked up at any time during the promenade from our Information Station located in Studio 10, adjacent to the main museum building.
The promenade is curated by visual artist Siobhán Clancy who has designed a series of viewing platforms to house the films. The day will include an exhibition, ’A Lab of Altered Viewing’, of Surrealist-influenced work created by CanTeen members with visual artist Louise Manifold. You can learn about the inspiration behind the films in the Process Corner, meet some of the young creators and kick back in the Soldiers’ Games Area. There will also be a short looped documentary going behind the scenes on the 2015 Two Suitcases Project.

About the project
Since 2014, CanTeen have taken part in Helium’s annual film project which aims to address the cultural needs of teenagers with experience of illness, including those who may miss out on opportunities in their schools or communities due to their conditions. Participants collaborate with filmmakers, artists, writers and theatre makers to develop and film their own original work.
