Claregalway Educate Together National School Fabric Project
Created 2009-02-16 by Ester Kiely
Location: Sub-urban - Co. Galway
Duration: 2009-02-16 to 2009-05-31
Project Outline
I am voluteering to create a fabric piece for the school in collaboration with the children in each of the 3 classrooms
- Junior & Senior Infants
- 1st, 2nd & 3rd Class
- 4th, 5th, 6th Class
The theme is `What makes my school different".
Phase 1.
The children have used silk paints to interpret the theme on a piece of plain cotton.
Phase 2.
The children selected their favourite fabric to create a `frame` for their painted cloth. Each child learned how to make a seam by adding one side of the frame to their picture using an 85-year old hand-cranked sewing machine. They also learned about the way a sewing machine works and how the shuttle bobbin moves back and forth.
Phase 3.
The pieces will be joined to make 3 classroom wall-hangings for the school to use on open-day, multicultural day and other celebrations.
Outcomes:
The children will explore the use of fabric, stitch and colouring into fabric to create artwork.
