Discovery Box, Rita Duffy’s Artic Circus at West Cork Arts Centre

Project Outline

In December 2012 i was asked to create a Discovery box* in response to Pita Duffy’s exhibition ’Artic Circle’ in the West Cork Arts Centre. At this stage i had been working with the arts Centre for almost 2 years on various projects and was familiar with the space. I was given introduction to the exhibition by the Gallery Director, Ann Davoren, which followed my subsequent mulling over and gathering of appropriate objects and materials for ’clues’ to the activities that would unfold within the box. The central themes of the exhibition became as important as the sense of the exhibition, in this case the Artic, exploring the northernly, cold atmosphere of the work, play with the colours and activities in the paintings and importance of storytelling and narrative. Following the creation of the box, i led two supporting workshops open to children and their parents/carers in which engaged the participants with the exhibition.
