Primary Schools Programme, West Cork Arts Centre
Created 2011-09-23 by Alison Cronin
Location: West Cork Arts Centre - Co. Cork
Duration: 2011-09-23 to 2012-03-24
Project Outline
West Cork Arts Centre’s Primary Schools Programme is an annual programme that seeks to be open and explorative, to create space for each child’s vision and to use visual arts as a conduit to explore a child’s view of the world. It is not solely about developing skills, or experiencing materials or techniques, but about the genuine learning, dialogue and exchange that can take place between artist, teacher and child.
This year’s programme is based on the exhibition Freefall by Amy Walsh at WCAC. Each of the ten participating groups visits the gallery for a day for a gallery tour and workshops, by artist facilitator Alison Cronin, based on what they’ve seen. This is followed by a meeting with the class teacher to discuss the childrens responses, needs and interests and to develop a project to suit each group. The class teacher will deliver this project in the classroom with support through two visits to the school from the artist facilitator after christmas. The project ends with an exhibition of the children’s work at WCAC in March next year. Two dedicated special needs units also take part in the programme facilitated by artist/facilitator Tess Leak.
