Our BIG Book of Colours
Created 2010-09-29 by Shona MacGillivray
Location: Urban - Co. Clare
Duration: 2010-09-29 to 2010-12-20
Project Outline
The children were introduced to one colour at a time...via watered down tempera paints on wet paper. We also read/looked at Dr Suess, My Many Coloured Days, many times. They were asked how they felt about the colour and then to paint anything they thought about. The teachers and I recorded their comments. Most of them completly covered a page in fluid colour, telling me it was a Dragon, a Fire Truck, or A Bouncey Castle (for Red). For the older children faces appeared, and hearts and landscapes. I wanted them to experiance each colour seperatley, and was curious how they would tackle being given no subject matter to paint. As sessions progressed, I introduced a vague subject matter, as I could see some of them floundering, not having the confidence or know- how to go with their own thoughts, particulary the 11yrs and up.All these children have learning difficulties or/and behavoiral issues, and for some participants allowing free expression is great fun, for others intimidating, and others permission to create creative mayhem! I presented some of their work in book form, each child contributing paintings to one of two books, to be kept in the school. From this project I have ideas of further exploring their interest in facial expressions , and their desire to literaly paint arms and faces, not paper!
