Project Outline

Irish Music Education (www.irishmusiceducation.ie) is a new resource for the music education community in Ireland. 


Irish Music Education aims to:



  • Connect the diverse strands of music education in Ireland.

  • Raise awareness of the variety of practices in music education and of the current initiatives being carried out in these.

  • Draw on the understanding of the music education community to provide reliable and research led information on music education in Ireland.

  • Engage the music education community with this resource in order to stimulate debate and discussion on issues affecting music education in Ireland.

  • Foster the exchange of ideas, knowledge, resources and expertise.

  • Be a collective forum for initiatives which connect music education research with music education practice.

  • Create opportunities for further research and research partnerships.

  • Provide a point of connection for conferences, seminars and research and practice groups and document the work of practice groups, reading groups and other initiatives within Irish Music Education.

  • Be a flexible resource that can respond to the emerging support needs of research and practice in music education


Who is involved?
 Mary Immaculate College, Limerick and St Patricks College, Drumcondra are the lead institutions and funders of the project.
The website is currated monthly by a guest curator who writes a lead article reflecting different perspectives on Irish music education.


Initiatives
Together with this website Irish Music Education hosts a spring conference to showcase research and practice. A music education reading group and music education practice group have been set up by the lead institutions. Through partnership with the music education community other initiatives will be put in place reflecting the broad spectrum of music education.


At a time when Ireland is seeking innovative ideas, creative inputs, fresh energy and new perspectives, IME provides an inspiring new force for music education in the country. Most importantly, it is a doing organisation. Its power and drive lies in the hands of its participants and so will derive guidance from their needs and interests. It has the potential to be a powerful development for Irish music education.
