Professional Statement

As a self-employed artist I am highly motivated and dedicated to the development and delivery of high quality, innovative workshops. I constantly seek to employ new effective models of facilitation, which I discover through both research and experimentation, as well as employing unfamiliar materials and techniques. In short, such workshops have involved cutting-edge sculptural formats using a combination of man-made materials with natural materials and the design of a three dimensional mask from one two-dimensional sheet of card. My motivation for working with both children and adults is the joy in seeing their creativity flourish and their growing confidence through learning and trusting in their own abilities. My role as an Artist Facilitator involves the design and delivery of workshops and the success of which depends upon detailed planning and preparation. In Spring 2007, 2009 and 2010 I adapted, coordinated and delivered a six week bespoke story writing, illustration and bookbinding workshop for The Ark, entitled Bookmarks. This was commissioned by Trinity Access Programme and delivered to three Dublin-based disadvantaged primary schools. The exhibition in Trinity College was covered by RTE news. TAP`s ambition is to encourage the participating children to continue to third level education and said it was their `most successful primary school programme to date`. I completed an in-depth evaluation of this project, and through this and many others have experience in managing budgets. In May 2007 I project managed, devised and delivered Bright Heights and Bushy Tails, for The Ark, which was commissioned by The National College of Ireland. During this three-week project I collaborated with five classes from disadvantaged primary schools in inner-city Dublin, to create a sculptural walkway with a stained-glass effect, which mimics a forest canopy. It involved adhering drawings on transparent vinyl of plant and animal life, between thick panels of acetate, which were later moulded and fixed around a semi-circular wooden walkway. The success of this sculptural project was dependent upon close collaboration between both of these organisations and myself. This sculpture has been permanently installed in the courtyard of The National College of Ireland in the IFSC, Dublin. In addition to my aforementioned skills as an artist I have expert ability in sculpture and have devised several `living sculpture` workshops using willow, moss, seeds and topiary techniques. These are sculptures that grow and change with time. It is my preference to devise workshops in disciplines such as paper engineering (pop-up illustration and origami), mechanical toys, illustration and fine art drawing, although I do have skills in other visual art disciplines. I am skilled in teaching children`s workshops in pop-up illustration, mechanical toys and building circuits for motorised toys. I also have print-making skills in silk-screen printing, collography and stamp-making.
