Background
I am a professional glass artist, for the last 14 years, now working from my Meath based studio. I have given glass workshops to adults and children since 2001. In the last 3 years I have been interested in working with schools and have done numerous short and long term creative craft led and some glass projects in schools with pupils from junior infants to 6th years secondary pupils.
I am currretnly researching the effects and advantages of integrating creative, artistic led projects within the classroom, especially in Primary schools, through a year long seminar series in NCAD, facilitated by the Crafts Council of Ireland and Fulbright.

Professional Statement
As an Artist I choose to express my thoughts and ideas through the medium of glass. I work with mostly sheet glass, adding colour with powder enamels. Using kiln-forming techniques such as fusing and slumping (bending the glass) I create vessel forms and textured panels.
In my sculptural work I also texture and sandblast the surface, creating larger pieces for interiors and outdoor areas.
I am interested in the concept of layering and space throughout my work.
I often leave gaps or large areas of clear so the line of the glass will lead the eye to the other side.
The simplicity and quality of Scandinavian design has greatly influenced my work. I like the materials to speak for themselves. Simple line, contrasting textures, subtle colour and overall form are the main elements to my work.
When you are working on an idea you have to sweat, but in the end product nothing of this may show. A completed work should look as though it has always been there, simple, obvious. Tapio Wirkkala, Finnish Designer
