Priscila Fernandes (b. 1981) is a Portuguese visual artist based in Rotterdam. She graduated from the Piet Zwart Institute, Rotterdam with an MA, after obtaining a BA from the National College of Art and Design, Dublin. She has been artist in residence at IASPIS, Stockholm; Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin; and most recently at the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin.
Guest Editor Katy Fitzpatrick met up with Priscila during her last week at IMMA to chat about her practice and in particular her most recent project called ’?Y el Arte?’ (’What About Art?’). This project, exploring aesthetic education in early twentieth-century Barcelona, manifested in an exhibition at Fundació Joan Miró, a publication and a number of events.
Could you tell me about your practice, in particular your interests in pedagogy and play?

We might talk about your most recent artwork/project ’?Y el Arte?’, which manifested in an exhibition, publication and a number of events. It’s dealing with aesthetic education, albeit a century ago, in schools. Could you talk a bit about this project? How did it come about? And how did it manifest?

Do you think the suggested approaches, philosophies and artworks/essays proposed in the book ’?Y el Arte?’ are still relevant for art practice and formal education today?

I know that there are a couple of projects that you have worked directly with children in making the work. How have you approached this?

Do you know when children have encountered your artworks what their responses have been? Do you consider children as viewers / consumers when making your work?
